The Unofficial Rookie Father Q & A Column

Okay, welcome to the unofficial Rookie Father quesion and answer column. This is where the unexperienced, green, newly initiated father (myself) asks the questions, and you (the enlightened reader, or the pretended enlightened reader) gives the answers. Since the questions will be focused on the area of newborn/infant care, experience in that area is appreciated. Thank you.And now, for the first question:

Question 1: My newborn is having trouble sleeping in her cradle. For example, she will fall asleep after eating, and when she is transferred to her cradle, she begins to cry after a few minutes. Upon picking her up, she will settle down and fall back asleep. If I repeat the process, it happens again (although sometimes she does fall asleep in her cradle). How can I get her to sleep in her cradle?

Is she all bundled up? I know its summer time, but newborns love to be bundled and to feel secure so if you wrap her tightly in a light receiving blanket that might make a difference. However, if you are already doing this then we're (Greg and I) not sure....

The suggestion from Michelle is a good one. Another thing you can try is to lightly pat her on the back when you first lay her down so that she feels some motion. Whle you are holding her, she feels some of the motion of you and your actions. Then when you lay her in the cradle, it is completely motionless and that is no fun after she spent months swimming around. When she settles down and falls back to sleep, you can slowly stop patting her and she should stay asleep. But you may have to deal with some crying and just let her cry. Otherwise she will expect to be picked up and held all the time.
